If comedy is crucial to an action anime, don't listen to 9Ball in regards to "Macross Frontier"!. I'm a huge fan of the series (only 3 episodes so far) and Robotech/Macross in general - but the Robotech/Macross universe never was strong in the comedy department!.
Humor + action series that I've watched: "Full Metal Panic" and "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" (starts off very funny, ends very serious)!. Both are fairly serious animes that contain mecha with humor/romance on the sides!.
If the description of "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" doesn't interest you, still give it a shot and try to stick with it!. I wasn't really interested in it until I actually watched it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

All of these have comedy,but it has fighting as well so there is bound to have serious and sadness mixed in!.
FMA-Two brothers,Ed and Al are Alchemists searching for a special item to help get Al's body back,because a long time ago,they tried to revive their mom with Alchemy,but apparently,that was a big sin and is also impossible!.So for punishment,Al's body disappeared,causing him to be 'invisible' so he had to use a big suit of armor for his body!.And Ed,had one arm and one leg taken!.He used mechanicals in place!.On their journey,Ed becomes an Official Alchemist,so he can do stuff he couldn't before!.(sorry if I don't explain what you want,I haven't watched in a long time)
Inuyasha-Kagome,a 15 year old girl living in Tokyo,lives in a "sacred" place,because it has a 1000 year old tree and a shrine with a well in it!.On the day of her birthday,she is about to go to school when her brother is inside the shrine looking for their cat!.Sota,(the brother) thinks the cat is in the well,but is too afraid to go look,so Kagome goes and checks it out!.She gets sucked into the well and is attacked by a demon,and when she finally climbs out,she isn't in the shrine!.Later,we find out she is 1000 years in the past!.A half demon,named Inuyasha,is under a spell and 'dead',pinned to a tree by a sacred arrow!.The demon from the well comes back and Kagome has to release Inuyasha to save everyone,everyone being the villagers she met and herself!.Then,a sacred jewel comes from inside Kagome's body,and the demon eats it,and becomes stronger!.There are more details,but here is a nutshell:Kagome shattered the jewel into like A THOUSAND pieces,and they scattered all over the world!.Inuyasha and Kagome have to go and find the pieces to protect the world from evil demons seeking the power of the jewel!.
D Gray Man-Allen Walker,a 15 year old boy,has Innocence,a special material with super powers,in his hand,and can turn his hand into a weapon!.He becomes an Excorcist,people who have Innocence and use it to fight Akuma,or demons!.(How the demons work is complicated,so I'm skipping most of it)The Akuma are created by the Millennium Earl,an evil thing trying to destroy the world!.(BTW my own opinion of the Earl,is,he is a big FAT mofo)The Earl is trying to destory all Innocence,so the Excorcists don't get in his way!.Excorcists go out on missions and find Innocence and then give it to Generals,who go about looking for people compatible with the Innocence to become Excorcists!.Only people compatible may become Excorcists!.So Allen joins the Black Order (The name of the Excorcistclub lol!.The name of the Organization)
