The overwhelming majority of American comic book protagonists aren't soldiers or ex-soldiers!. I don't know how you came to that conclusion!.

The characters I can think of offhand who do fit that description are mainly from Marvel Comics and include Captain America (who was a soldier in World War II); The Thing (who was a combat pilot in World War II, then was retconned to having been a pilot in the Korean War, and I believe was also retconned to being a pilot during the Vietnam War); Nick Fury, who used to be the head of S!.H!.I!.E!.L!.D!., was a combat soldier in World War II and appeared in 'Sgt!. Fury and his Howling Commandos' before he was later incorporated into the larger Marvel Universe; Frank Castle, who became the Punisher, was a gung-ho Special Forces trooper who later went completely psychotic and took it upon himself to murder those he thought were criminals; Reed Richards, who was shown on one mission behind enemy lines in an early issue of 'Sgt!. Fury and his Howling Commandos (Richards follows the pattern of being retconned into progressively later wars that was established with Ben Grimm (a!.k!.a!. the Thing); Princess Diana (a!.k!.a!. Diana Prince) was in the Women's Army Corp during World War II and the Korean War and is the only major character from DC who I can think of who was in the military, aside from characters who appeared in DC's war comics which are no longer published and haven't published since the 80s!.

Look at those who are major characters who have never been in the military:

Spider-Man
The Hulk (although his civilian identity, Bruce Banner, was employed by the Army but not as a soldier)
The Human Torch (original version or silver age version)
The Invisible Girl
Daredevil (in fact, he was classified 4-F during the Vietnam era)
Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellowjacket/Dr!.Pym
The Wasp
Iron Man (although he was a civilian weapons manufacturer)
Thor (who could be said to be a warrior, which is not the same as a modern day soldier)
Hawkeye
Quicksilver
Scarlet Witch
Wonder Man
Hercules (a warrior but not a soldier)
Black Panther
The Angel
Cyclops
Marvel Girl/Phoenix
The Beast
Ice-Man
Red Wolf
Superman
Batman
Robin/Nightwing
Plastic Man (he was an F!.B!.I!. agent)
The Spirit
The Flash (any version)
Green Lantern (any version)
The Atom (any version)
Blue Beetle
Jo'nn Jo'nzz, the Martian Manhunter
Aquaman
Green Arrow and Speedy
Vigilante
Scarlet Avenger and Stripesy
Dr!. Mid-Nite (another blind 4-F character)
Robotman (either version)
Elasti-Girl
Negative Man
Celsius
Prince Ra-Man
Eclipso
Kid Flash
Wonder Girl
Aqualad
Black Widow
Starman (any version)
Manhunter (any version)
Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel Jr!.
Mary Marvel
Elongated Man
Zatana
Firestorm

I could probably continue the list of NON-soldiers for a good long while, extending it to defunct publisher and not finding many exceptions who did serve as soldiers, but I don't see any point in doing that!. Your thesis is simply wrong, and you'll eithe admit that or you won't!. If you won't, I don't see any point mounting up more and more evidence!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
