I can't remember the name of this cartoon featuring giant robots?!

Roughly the mid/late 90's i remember watching this cartoon with people who would control giant robots in order to protect their city!. They controlled the robots from sitting inside them and it had male character who controlled a blue robot and a female character who controlled a red robot and used an axe as her weapon!. I specifically remember an episode where they were fighting this massive moon which was consuming the whole city, and then later in the show realizing that the moon was growing something inside!?
