Vpistov hit it spot on!. As most Anime Studio's original works are either collaborations of multiple writers & even multiple directors, it's rather hard to keep track of them!.

But as many Anime series take proven & liked stories from the manga-world, the mangaka gets more of the spotlight!. And it is often the director / Studio who gets all the flak if the Anime fails (often because it doesn't resemble the manga)!. Thus, as Vpistov stated the Anime directors don't have as much creative freedom to put their influence into the series!. And the directors themselves are not often "advertised" along with their respective series!.

-------------------- I'm an example -
I can name off many mangaka & their manga series!. Some include:
-Akamatsu Ken - Love Hina, Mahou Sensei, Itsudatte My Santa, etc!.
-Fujisawa Tohru - Great Teacher Onizuka, Tokko, Rose Hip Rose, etc!.
-Gatou Shouji - Full Metal Panic series
-Inoue Kazurou - Midori no Hib, Ai Kora, Aoi Destruction
-Miura Kentaro - BERSERK!!
-Shirow Masamune - Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Tank Police, etc!.

But if my life depended on it, I can only name 2 Anime Directors at the top of my head:
-Hayao Miyazaki & all of his wonderful films
-Shinichiro Watanabe - just hearing that he made Cowboy Bebop made me watch Samurai Champloo

[Edit] Shinichiro, is in there because Samurai Champloo was advertised as "from the Director of Cowboy Bebop!." And now I know his name!. Other directors / series just don't get that same advertising!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Directors are often not the creators of the various series they work on!. Most anime are based on manga, and the credit usually goes the writer/artist of that manga for the series!. When you consider the majority of the art and story are based on their work, rather than the directors, you can see why the director tends to get so much less!.

Directors of feature films are a little bit different!. Often they have much more creative control!. And since they have to work within the physical world and deal with the day-to-day complications of shooting and dealing with actors, they tend to get a little more credit!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There are a few famous anime directors, but they don't make made-for-Japanese-television anime series; they make feature length animated movies!. The same principle works around the world; one tends to devalue what one can get for free (or at least watch on television) but will think more highly of what one has to pay to see (before it comes to television)!. In other words, television directors are always considered second rate in comparison to movie directors!. also, while a vast audience might be willing to spend two or even three hours of their time watching a self-contained story, far fewer will be willing to follow a storyline that is broken into episodes!.

You would probably have trouble naming any American (or Canadian) television director, who isn't credited as a creator of a television series in each and every epidose!. For the most part, general audiences don't know the names of many directors (Alfred Hitchcock used to be an exception), and most general audiences don't know what a director does!.

I see a bit of irony in the fact that you have picked a Japanese director who, like many people in Japan, has a name that was originally Korean!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

because not many people understand anime that much when it is in the originial language, apart from japan!. plus their english may not be very good and american directors are most famous!. plus not many anime series are out on nromal tv, apart from cartoonnetwork and stuff!. they are probably more famous in japan!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Anime isn't that popular right now, very few people can create multiple big hits!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
