it is believed that madara uchiha fought (even manipulated itachi slightly / or greatly) itachi to weaken him before hand!.
It is speculation, but some think that itachi may have had a sharingan duel with madara and he was forced to use alot of his chakra and things of that nature!.
(this is only supported by the fact that when itachi dies there are black flames ((special eye technique)) that are veiwed through madara's eyes, as if he had be involved in some way to making itachi that weak and or killing itachi!.
regardless if you read up to the latest manga, you will know that even with itachi's death, itachi turns out to be a good guy, having done everything in his past for the sake of the leaf village, and even at his death bed gave sasuke his special eye techniques to protect him from madara!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

During the fight with Sasuke and Itachi both Sasuke and Itachi were already low on chakra as well as being very injured however Itachi had suffered more damage and end up dieing!. Itachi had already been injured before the fight because he has over used the MS,so he was already at a disadvantage before the fight even started!.
At the end of the battle Itachi ended up dieing and Itachi had died on the wrong!. So,Sasuke had felt remorse for Itachi had layed down next to him,and had fainted due to lack of energy and chakra,as well as his injuries!.
