After watching Death Note, I have been unable to find another anime which does not appear as if it is intended for younger audiences!.

Darker than Black- must see!. It has an engaging, mysterious story, characters called "contractors" with special abilities!. Very deep story and characters!. It has a big puzzle to solve as throughout the show!.

Monster is a masterpiece, easily one of the best ever made!. It is set in the 1990's and has no "magic" or "special powers" but it doesn't need them!. It is a very "real" story with surreal circumstances!. You will never forget this amazing story or the feeling it will give you!. a must see!.

Well, Naruto is kind of childish in the first few episodes, but if you just deal with it for a while, as the plot thickens, it gets better!.
Paranoia Agent is a horror/violent anime, that is kind of directed towards older audiences; it has some suggestive themes, its kind of creepy, and confusing, but I'd recommend it :]
I'm currently watching a supernatural thriller kind of anime called When They Cry; some of the moments in the first few episodes are a little childish, but it quickly picks up the slack and goes into the gore and violence!. From what I've seen, its very good!. Don't let the innocent, cute faces of the characters fool you; its actually quite a disturbing anime!.
One definitely intended for older audiences is Elfen Lied, which includes some nudity, cursing, and alot of violence!. There's one episode, which nearly made me cry (xD), in which one of the main characters, as a child, was forced to watch bullies smash the head in of her stray puppy-dog friend!.
