Originally, in the comics, Stark was hit by a piece of shrapnel from a Vietnamese booby trap, which lodged a piece of shrapnel in his heart!. He is captured by the Viet Cong, and ordered to build them weapons, and he instead invented a breastplate powered by "transistors and batteries" that encompassed his whole chest with a electromagnet in it, to suspend the chunk of shrapnel so it would not move itself into his heart by muscular contraction!.
In the movie, much the same thing happens, except it is now the Ten Rings in the Middle East, and the device is now a "arc generator" some kind of supercompact, ultra-tech power source, connected to a electromagnet!.
Either way, in both stories, the power source feeding the electromagnet is also powerful enough to run a power suit (which is the Iron Man armor), to allow him to escape his captors, and in neither case does the tech work that way in real life!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Remember at the begining when he was in the vehical with the armed force people and they were getting shot at!.!.!.well when he wakes up he has that battery attached to his chest and the guy who attached it holds up this glass thing with particals in it!. Theres particals in his chest from the explosions and that device keeps the particals away from his importaint organs so he can live!. He then made the light up one to take its place so it would last longer because a battary wont last as long!. Basically its a thing to keep him alive its like a heart you could sayWww@Enter-QA@Com
