he was a shinigami that lost his powers but kept his memories!. when the town is attacked by a menos he defends it cuz his son is fighting grimmjow if i remember!. his zanpacto in its unrealeased form looks exactly like ichigos when his sword was still unreleased!. he then states that hes an ex captain during that fight stating that if shinigami dont supress their power their zanpactos would be as tall as skyscrapers!. remember during that episode with the gran fisher!. he stated that he never called ichigo ichigo when kon was in his body saying he knew all a long!. later on he visits uuruyus father saying he has regained hsi powers :3
he just acts weird to keep his identity as described above a secret from ichigo =3Www@Enter-QA@Com

Ha ha! He's the best anime dad I've seen! Its just his personality, if he hadn't lost his wife he might've been a bit more aloof- but not by much!
Besides his constant 'training' (this involves him lunging madly at Ichigo with some form of greeting) may have helped Ichigo get into the physicality of Shinigami duties!! Oh and if you haven't seen it already he has a darker side(read black kimono side)!Www@Enter-QA@Com

you don't know what he is! he's a shinigami!. and i believe he's not just a captain level shinigami!. he's a former royal guard! (my speculation)!. or maybe he's one of the princes, sons of the King!. that's why ichigo is very powerful!. it's in the genes, y' know!.

You're wrong Orca fighter he was not the 11th squad captain, we assume he was a captain but we don't know that yet!. Anyway!.!.!. he was most likely the 11th squad' s previus captain (my oppinion) since Kensei described that capatain " he lives at the beat of his own drum"Www@Enter-QA@Com
