Answers:
What is a normal cartoon!? Actually there are a couple of things going on, including recent changes in American cartoons!.

Manga and Anime are Japanese cartooning!. Among other things, this means they owe a lot to traditional oriental art, which you essentially learned by copying the drawings of your teachers!. The cheap prints known as Ukio-ye or Pictures of the Floating world, which were widely on sale from the sixteenth century into the last century have a lot in common with them stylistically, including the heavy reliance on line!. Look up Hokusai and Hiroshoge!. Since it is hard to see their original prints try to get your hands on as many copies as possible!. That will explain the drawing style!.

At the same time, seventeenth and eighteenth century began a golden age of western cartooning which the twentieth century ended!. Hogarth, Gillray Daumier and Nast are remembered as great artists who often made funny pictures!. Generally the technique which people recognize is that the more like a baby people look the cuter and funnier they are!. Thus, 2-5 heads in length tend to be humorous characters, 5-8 heads in length tend to be realistic (and those are our real proportions generally: most of us are 7 1/2 heads high but we tend to be between 5 and 8 and that is considered normal) heroic figures tend to be between 8 - 12 heads high and anything longer than that is a grotesque monster!.

There was a lot of mixing in cartooning in the old days!. Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, had as his assistant the humorous cabby Doiby Dickles!. Plastic Man had his own funny assistant!. In Europe, Tintin is both humorous and funny, and while the exaggerations tend to be subdued (many of his assistants like Edgar P!. Jacobs did tightly realistic strips on their own) they are there!. In the U!.S!. about the sixties this sort of thing became VERY unfashionable!. One of the last holdouts was Steve Ditko in early issues of Spiderman and Dr!. Strange!. And we fans complained!. Well, we got our wish!. Drawing has gotten so realistic in X-Men and so forth it's often hard to look at it!. Europe is somewhat better but it's really the Japanese who have preserved most of the old cartoon specific traditions!. As late as 2002 Leiji Matsumoto's Captain Harlock had a crew which was between 2 and 5 heads high and most officers between 7 and 12!.

Two other things to mention: while animation makes it difficult to shade because animating shadows is such a hassle generally, traditional Japanese art is not into building up forms with tone or the technique of chiaroscuro (light and dark)!. In fact, the story goes that when some traders, I believe Portuguese, brought a painting of their sovereign to the Japanese Court, the Japanese looked at it closely and then politely asked if he was deformed because his skin color had such a wide range!. the other thing to remember about Japanese art is that the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans have low bridges on their noses!. This gives the impression to us Westerners that they have slanted eyes!. They don't, it's just the center of the face is a little lower than the sides!. There is another way to render it than the slanted eye convention we use: the large eyes in Anime and Manga are precisely that!. Of course they give some Caucasians large eyes!. As they sometimes give us small noses when the tradition is to render a Caucasian with a long nose!. That is another hallmark of Japanese cartooning!. Not just the large eyes, but that they have a very direct relationship to reality!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

the eye's are different, the face is the different, basically the whole drawing style is different!. in manga, haven't you noticed that the eye's are always huge and really animated!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sometimes the manga has more info or just has i semi-different plotWww@Enter-QA@Com
