What are comic archetypes?!
Question: What are comic archetypes!?
Answers:
That would be characters, appropriate to comedies, who have characteristics which can be recognized at a glance!. One of the most obvious examples is Pantaloon (from Italian Comedia del Arte), a fat businessman, who is greedy, and has delusions of grandeur!. Silent film comedians also fit into the achetype tradition, and Chaplin's "Little Tramp" is a good example of something that was new in 1913 but could have been a character from a fifteenth century comedy!. For that matter, Oliver Hardy may as well have been Pantaloon except he was more blue collar!.
Other comic archetypes would be (but not limited to):
The Wise Fool
The Miser (who has wealth but lives in poverty rather than spend a cent)
The Gossip
The Star Crossed Lovers (who could have any number of problems but are probably just stupid)
The Fickle Woman (who bores easily)
The Overly Pious Hypocrite
The Corrupt Official (sometimes a member of the clergy)
Mrs!. Malaprope (someone who pretends to be better educated than they really are but exposes their ignorance by saying the wrong "big words" or by hopelessly mispronouncing words)
To the list above it would be possible to add more modern characters from popular culture like:
The Church Lady (from Saturday Night Live)
The Blond (from any "Blond Joke")
Mango (from Saturday Night Live)
