There are a lot of good animes out there but my favorite is Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X!. It revolves around the story of Kenshin Himura aka Battousai the Slasher!. He was an infamous assasin during the Tokugawa era who was both feared and admired (in a twisted way) by many!. After the era ended, he regretted taking the lives of so many people an decided to be a wanderer to seek atonement for his sins!.
This anime has a series, a movie and 2 OVAs!. The first OVA, Samurai X Trust and Betrayal chronicles Kenshin's early life as a young boy who have witnessed the cruelty of people murdering people up to his days as a young but feared assasin and how he eventually got the famous cross-shaped scar on his cheek!.
The series on the other hand chronicles Kenshin's life after he gave up his life as Battousai the slasher and how he started a new life together with his newfound friends!. It follows their day-to-day adventures as well as the appearance of fellow swordsmen and slashers who tracked Kenshin for revenge!.
The last segment following the timeline after the series is Samurai X Reflections!. It continues where the series left off and tells of Kenshin's and his wife, Kaoru's, life together as a couple!. Like the title suggests, it's full of reflections, and pretty sad and depressing ones at that!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I suggest Fullmetal Alchemist if you want an anime that has action, but has a good in-depth story and a good sense of characters!. A definite anime worth watching!.

Death Note is a must watch although there are plenty of good options!. Watching Death Note will give you a couple of different styles and taste with anime!.
