Cyclops optic blast is not hot, it is pure impact!. This was established in an issue of Fantastic Four where the Super Skrull was impersonating members of the X Men!. He zapped Ben Grimm, and Ben said to himself, "Wait, I've been on the receiving end of Cyclops' blasts before, and I know they ain't hot!" So that was how he knew it was an imposter!.

So we are talking about two different eye beams, here!. As far as I know, Cyclops is the only character in comics to have a vision-based impact blast; all the rest are heat or lightning or some other energy!.

So this accounts for the difference when they blast things!. Superman CAN focus his heat vision in a very small spot, so he can slice things by burning them apart in a line!. And Superman CAN cause some things to explode by heating them, especially if they are wet or contain water (the water boils instantly, so it is a steam explosion!.)

According to the Elliott S!. Maggin Superman novels, (Last Son of Krypton, MIracle Monday) Superman's heat vision is the same temperature as the red sun of Krypton, which is not as hot as Earth's sun!. But it's a few thousand degrees!.

On the other hand, back in the 50's and 60's, Superman was shown using his heat vision to ignite new suns for alien races when their stars stopped burning, but that is ridiculously powerful, that is when he was so super-cosmically powerful they should have called him SupernaturalMan!. That is why they had to tone him down, so they could have interesting stories again!.

It is important to remember that originally, Superman did not HAVE heat vision!. Originally, Superman just had quick wits and good perceptions so that he spotted things before other peole did, or noticed things that were supposed to be hidden!. Then the writers decided to make him able to see THROUGH things, and that was X-ray vision!.

Then the writers learned that x-rays were beams of energy projected by machines and that they heated the materials they passed through!. (Siegel and Schuster were very young men when this happened, maybe 21, and maybe they didn't know much science)

So Superman started to refer to "the heat FROM my X-ray vision"!.!.!.! And he used his X-ray vision to burn things!. Then they just started calling it heat vision and from then on they were separate powers!. That was the beginning of when he started to get more and more powerful, because they didn't establish firm limits for his abilities!.

Superman's other vision powers!.!.!. microscopic, telescopic, x-ray!.!.!. these are what today we would call 'clairvoyance'!. Back in the 60's, DC used to have him use his combined x-ray, telescopic and heat vision, so that he could look through a wall, see and burn something far away outside, without burning the wall!. Thus, his heat vision is really separate from the other vision powers, what we would call 'pyrokinesis'!.
So the clairvoyance is just a targeting system for the pyrokinesis!.

(Granted, they haven't had Superman do this for a long time, but you never know what they'll write next!.)

His infra-red vision is also separate; he can actually see infra-red light, which humans can't, so he can see in the dark!.
(I suppose if he uses his heat vision to heat something in a cold place at a distance and then switches to infra-red vision, it is like turning on a light in a dark place, to him!.)

Cyclops only has the single power and it is only good for breaking things!. For example, Superman can use his heat vision to weld things together, like broken cables when a suspension bridge begins to collapse, so he doesn't have to sit there holding it up until repair crews finish working!. Cyclops can't do that!.

Cyclops eye beams are pretty powerful!. They may be able to cause more damage than Superman's heat vision at first glance (I just had to say that!.) According to the Who's Who in the Marvel Universe , Cyclops can adjust the power if his beams from a firecracker impact up to a hundred pounds of dynamite, or something like that!. On one occasion, he blew up Wolverine's cigar (without hurting Wolverine) because he didn't like the smoke in his face!.

also, he has fine control!. Cyclops can focus his eyebeams wide or narrow!. He can punch holes through things or just blast them!. But because the energy travels in a physical line from his eyes to the target, things always move away from him along that line!.

Cyclops does not have any special perception powers, so if he got poked in the eye with a sharp stick or had dust blown in his eyes, or even if it is just dark or foggy and he can't see for that reason, he can't really use his power!. It doesn't create any light to see by!.

(Despite what they may show in the movies for special effects when Cyck blasts something, the sparks are just from friction or from electrical cables he blows apart, and they don't last long enough to see by!.)

also, Cyclops MUST have his visor on, or close his eyes, or use his other ruby quartz glasses that won't let the power through, or it is uncontrolled and can harm anybody who gets in the way!.

The only time this happened to Superman was once (back in the 60's) when he was affected by Red Kryptonite and COULDN'T turn off his heat vision! He had to make a pair of lead goggles to keep his eyes closed at all time so he wouldn't burn things, and I think he had to make a special pair of glasses to make it look like his eyes were open as Clark, so people wouldn't suspect! He had to get around by using his super hearing, the way bats navigate, until the RED K wore off 48 hours later!.

I hope this helps!. By the way, thanks for bringing back all these memories!

Cyclops because its not just normal heat
its with force, or it an generate pressures
The beams derive their power from the absorption of ambient energy, most notably sunlight!. Cyclops's cells are constantly absorbing solar and other energy and transferring it to his eyes, which in turn serve as apertures which project extra-dimensional non-Einsteinian particles in beam form so sometimes its said that his powers cant work without sunlight

On my opinion i think his are strongerWww@Enter-QA@Com

Definitely Cyclops!. If you ever watch superman use his heat vision it normally takes a bit to do damage (in comics passage of a panel or 2 sometimes and in movies/tv a bit of time), that being said if there was a fire hydrant Cyclops could blast it into next Tuesday by the time Superman had melted the top of it a bit!.

I don't though remember any instance where Superman's heat vision goes out of control/full blast like Cyclops when he doesn't have a visorWww@Enter-QA@Com
