Blood+ - 50 episodes exactly
About a girl who has to fight off these vampiric creatures while realizing her true nature!. It's actually very good and the main focus is not battles!.
Monster - 74 episodes
A psychologic thriller about a neurosurgeon who saves a boy!. but once he realizes the boy is really a monstrous person, he decides that retribution he must take the life he saved!. Very chilling!. ^_^
Fullmetal Alchemist - 51 episodes (as was mentioned)
Two brothers go on a quest in a world of alchemy users to find the mythical Philospher's Stone in order to return their altered bodies back to normal!. (Cheap summary, but the show is actually one of the best anime I've seen)
Rurouni Kenshin - 95 episodes, or so (as was mentioned)
It's about a wandering samurai who vows never to kill again and the choices he must make in order to protect those close to him as well as Japan!. (Though older, I also recommend this anime!. Though it does have sword fights in it, it's not over done and the characters and very endearing!.)
Inuyasha - 167 episodes
It's a feudal fairytale, where a half-demon, a human girl from the future, a monk, a fox, and a demon hunter comes together to fight against the greatest evil from ruining the Feudal Era!. (It's has the occasional brawl, but if you want some comedy, some scary moments, and interesting characters it's something to look into!.!.!.unless you don't like demons!. ^_^)
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle - 52 episodes
It's CLAMP's latest work using past characters in a totally new setting!. The princess Sakura has lost her memories and her faithful fried Syaoran, with his companions Fai (a sorcerer) and Kurogane (a ninja) travel through different worlds into order to piece together the scattered fragments of her memories!. (This is the simple version of the plot!. It grows much bigger from there!. II haven't yet watched this anime, it's in queue, but I have read the manga!. If it's anything like the manga, the show will be very good ^_^)
Saiunkoku Monogatari - 58 episodes
If you like ancient China (kind of), covert plots, and beautiful men, Saiunkoku Monogatari is for you!. I has a little bit of everything in it!. Basically the beginning premise is Shuurei (the daughter of a librarian) dreams of being an influential member of society, able to help people, little did she dreamed she'd become the Emperor's consort! (I've only watched the first 9 episodes, but I hear it's good!.!.!.if you're into shoujo!.)

Shugo Chara is more magical girl but there is like magical fighting its i think 52 episodes and brand new
