Joker, in the original comics, never really had a backstory!. I guess DC Comics never thought he would be a big hit!. He appeared in the very first Batman comic book!. They tried to kill him on his 2nd comic appearance but, decided to save him to use as Batman's archenemy!.
Since then, several re-incarnations of Batman has brought joker in with sketchy backgrounds!. But, the most widely known version of what got him the white skin, green hair, and red smiling lips is his falling in a vat of toxic chemicals!. This was first shown in Who's Who in DC universe!.
This same backstory was used in the Batman movie with Jack Nicholson!.
In the latest movie with Heath Ledger, they didn't delve into what made him the joker!. The writers did pattern his "stories" to what Joker usually says in his comics about his past - always changing stories at every retelling!. The comics even went so far as to say Joker himself can't even remember which of his stories are true!.
One of my favorite joker lines:
"Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another!. If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!."Www@Enter-QA@Com

in the movie he changed his story every time he told it, first it was an attack on him by his father when he was young, then it was self inflicted to please his wife, so who really knowsWww@Enter-QA@Com
