Batman's been around since 1938, so you're talking about 70 years of history!.

In the Golden Age, Batman--like most heroes of the time--was pretty two-dimensional!. Most of those stories are dated, but that's where the groundwork for the character was laid!. Now, as to difficulty of getting them--if you're looking for the originals, some are rare and most are pretty darn expensive, BUT the DC Archives series has reprinted them in hardcover volumes!. They still don't come cheap--I think each book was about $80!.00 last I looked (10-12 comics per book)!. But it's a good sight more affordable than the 1000s of $ it would cost you to buy the originals!.

The Silver Age had its silliness and campiness, but it was also when characterization started!. Each hero--Batman no exception--developed a unique voice and personality!.

The Batman most comic readers are familiar with was written by Frank Miller in 1986!. Batman Year One, essentially started fresh--pretended that the last 50 years or so hadn't happened yet, and told the story of Batman as he was just starting out!. This was a four-issue mini series, which is still in print and in trade paperback!. Once it ended, new stories were set in the "present", and worked on the assumption that Batman had been around for about 10 years!.

There have been different titles featuring Batman at different times!. Two have been around the longest!.

1) Detective Comics!. It's actually older than the character!. Batman premiered in Detective comics #27!. It has historically focused on crimesolving/deductive reasoning stories!.

2) Batman started in 1940!. Stories in that title have the focus more on action and fighting!. Now, because Batman is a fighter and a detective, and a tactitian, and!.!.!. a lot of other things, you ARE going to see fighting in Detective and thinking in Batman!. It's NOT an 'either-or'!. But certain attributes are emphasized more than others!.

Right now, Batman Confidential is looking at cases set earlier in Batman's career!. Legends of the Dark Knight used to do that, also, but that title folded!.

Gotham Knights used to focus more on the family aspect!.

There are also a lot of limited series going on at any one time!.

My favorite stories would have to be

The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
The Killing Joke
A Death in the Family
A Lonely Place of Dying
Knightfall
Cataclysm
No Man's Land
Officer Down
Bruce Wayne Murderer
Bruce Wayne Fugitive
Hush

You might also want to read Nightwing (Dick Grayson, the original Robin, grown up), Robin (Tim Drake, the current Robin) or JLA!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
