It was a rule of the Shinigami the kill the holder of the Death Note after a period of time!. also, in the movie, Ryuk decides that Light has been using him to kill people instead of what Ryuk really wanted!. He uses the line "Who told you that you could lean on me!?" so when Light demanded he wrote a name in the Death Note, Ryuk wrote down "Yagami, Light"!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Haha to fully understand Death Note, you CAN'T go off the movies! The anime/manga explain it so much better!. Pretty much at the start (I don't know if this happened in the movie, but I know in the anime) in the very first episode Ryuk explains that he will be the one to eventually write Light's name in his Death Note!. A promise he keeps til the very last episode!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

dont know about the movie but in the manga and the anime he kills him because he figures it's better than watching him rot in prison- that would be boring!. And like the other dude said he did promise at the start that he'd be the one to write his name downWww@Enter-QA@Com
