Answers:
because most of these manga readers are pussy emos and cannot appreciate kick a$$ super heroesWww@Enter-QA@Com

Obviously not "everyone" loves manga, since you apparently don't care much for it!. I've seen very little manga that I really like, with the notable exception being "Barefoot Gen," which I think is one of the very best stories I've seen in any medium, including print!.

I believe that in America, manga owes it relative popularity to television, since most manga fans were fans of anime before they discovered manga!. Similarly, most comics fans probably discovered the comic book characters they do know through television and/or movies!. Never have a few characters who first appeared in comic books enjoyed such great popularity, and never have comic book sales been quite a low as they are now!. I miss the days when I could buy almost any comic book and know I would be able to read one or more complete stories in the book, and be entertained!. Manga strives to be epic, and reminds me more of the narrative style of a soap operas than of comics or any other entertainment medium I can think of off the top of my head!. Basically, I don't care much for manga, although I have sampled a fair amount of!. One of the few mangas I find myself missing, since I don't know how it ended, is "Mai, the Psychic Girl" which featured artwork that was much closer to that of English language comic books than that of most mangas!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

[Edit3] - cleaned it up somewhat, & finished
There are several possible reasons for the popularity of manga:

------------ The power of the Fan-girl
1!. First off, my main believe is that manga is powered by fan-girls!. One cannot avoid not knowing the sheer power of fan girls in our culture (you've seen the boy-band sensations throughout the past few decades & the recent Hannah Montana phenomena)!.

To support this there are over 6,172 Shoujo oriented series (target audience = teenage girls) vs 1,304 Shounen oriented series (target audience = teenage boys)!. In addition to that, there is a thriving female powered market for Yaoi series that even has whole conventions dedicated to it (boy x boy / homo-relationships, with over 4,371 series)!.
# Series to genre - http://www!.mangaupdates!.com/genres!.html

Most females can't find the attraction to constant super hero stories, blood & gore, steroid / mutant muscles, etc!. found in most modern day comics!.

------------ Genre for everybody: Man, Woman & Child
2!. Manga series come in many forms stretching from the blood & gore of Seien titles (Berserk & Gantz), to simple "slice of life" (Yotsubato), to mystery dramas (Monster), to romantic comedies (Love Hina), romantic dramas (Bride of the Water God), to sex-oriented Smut manga (Midnight Secretary) & sex-filled Adult Hentai, etc!. Their genres are much more immense & developed and attract all kinds of readers from toddlers, teenagers, adults, male & female!.

There are off course manga titles that are filled with muscle bound characters who can crush skulls & boulders in one blow (Fist of the North Star), but there are also those on the opposite end involving the problems school life romance between a tall girl & a short guy!.

Of course with just a wide field, there's thousands of different artists!. There are many "new / amateurish" artists who don't illustrate their series well (school girl comedies), nor do they have to as the series is based on "dialogue!." But there are also those who draw whole panoramas where you can spend minutes just admiring the pages full of environment (Blame & Vagabond)!.

Of course with the variety of genre's there's also a variety of storytelling types!. Some can be epic-long series (Doraemon from the 60's) or just be collections of one-shot stories gathered together into a volume!. There's just too much variety to every make a stereotype on "manga" as a whole!. The best you can do is make a stereotype of a specific manga genre (Shounen, Shoujo, Harems, Mecha, etc)!.

------------ The "Ordinary" Joe you can relate to
3!. There are thousands of series dedicated to ordinary people (not super-heroes), and hundreds more which fall under the "slice of life" genre!.

As Celine T stated in the first answer, most people can better relate to "normal" characters (not mutants or aliens) like the high school girl who's trying to get the "hot guy" or a normal person who has to use his brains / tactics & environment instead of constant hacking & slashing to defeat a significantly stronger foe!.

The "slice of life" genre are for those readers who can appreciate just normal aspects of life (conversations between friends, going to school, finding & doing your job, dating, taking care of your kids)!. But of course, there's always a twist in there to add some tension: a single mother / father, you've lost your job, you've just graduated and need direction in your life, confessing to the person you like, etc!.

These kinds of tales put the "ordinary Joe," someone everyone can relate with, as the Hero / protagonist!. As almost everyone can place themselves or can find themselves being friends who such mortal characters!.

------------ Internet availability
4!. As with the mp3 / music pirating phenomena earlier this decade, manga is experiencing a similar event!. Ignoring the minority of series that were licensed & translated for sale in the Western world, the majority of western Manga was once an underground movement by fans!. Fan-groups would gather together editors, translators, etc!. to scanlate (scan & translate) Japanese manga into English and release them for free to other fans who ordinarily wouldn't have been able to read a Japanese manga otherwise!.

The "premise" is that the fan-groups aren't "making money" & that they are increasing the popularity of manga as a whole (though by all international copyright laws, this is still deemed illegal by most countries / publishers fail to or don't want to enforce it)!. There are many fan-groups who respect licensing rights & drop licensed series but there are many who don't!. And most publishers don't send "cease & desist" letters to sites / groups (their reasons are their own)!.

Though in the last few years, html websites have boomed (about the same time as YouTube), and began delivering thousands of fan-group scanlated works to the mass public for FREE!. As comics are much harder to obtain over the internet, most fans who only need "internet browser" skills can instead turn to huge archives of fan scanlated manga!.

------------ Marketing
5!. The most popular Anime series are a multi-pronged marketing attack with TV series, video games, manga books, soundtracks, & merchandise!. I don't have to give a thorough explanation of this, as all I can do is utter the name: POKEMON!.

To lesser extents: Dragon Ball Z, & currently Naruto!. From there you can think of these series as "gateway drugs / addictions" to the rest of the Anime / manga worlds!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hey, I'm a comic book fan too but anime/manga is a growing sensation!.

I have to disagree with you, the art is not a pain!. I mean there's not much of a difference between manga art and comic art!. Look at J!. Scott Campbell's work and Jim Lee's; they both have similar styles to that of any mangaka!.

And I see no problem with the manga stories being "emotional", they're just adding more drama to their story!

Try out more mangas and maybe you'll get more interested!. :3 Try Death Note or Fullmetal Alchemist!Www@Enter-QA@Com

In my opinion, I love manga because some scenes in the manga are not included in the anime!. Some think that the endings of anime shows are cliffhangers!. To know the entire story, they read the manga!.

It's just like the movie harry potter!. People buy the book even if there is a movie coming out!. Some details in the book are not put in the movie!. These are some facts and trivia's and everything!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think people love mangas so much is because a most manga are also animes!. so usually they use manga to see what happens in the anime before they show the episodes so (no waiting)!. sometime the mangas have more details than anime so i like them!. plus one diff from a manga and a comic is that you read right to left not left to right!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm with you!. I love comic books (Brian K!. Vaughan is my hero) but I don't like manga!. There's something about the Japanese style of art that I don't find aesthetically pleasing!. I don't like anime either!. I've been trying to figure it out, I think it might have to do with the subjects not seeming to be the same style as the backgrounds!.

Plus manga always seems like it's for teenage girls!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

the drawing in comics are!.!.!.how can I say this!.!.!.
too "serious" perhaps, and!.!.!.I actually don't like the drawings in comics!.!.!.hate them actually!.!.!.
while Mangas!.!.!.Mangas just rock!. And the drawings are SO NOT simple!!!!.!.!.the creators painstakingly drew them!!!

so to sum it up,
Mangas are cool and they rock!.[most mangas anyway!. some "mangas" deserve to die!. By the "mangas" I mean SOME mangas that are!.!.!.uhm!.!.!.eewww!.!.!.there!.!.!.the drawings are rather disturbing too!. for example, uzumaki!. Look for that!. AND I DO NOT MEAN NARUTO!!!>!.<"]Www@Enter-QA@Com

comics are mainly super heros mangas are kinda like little sope operas!.!.!. and the art is actually really good!.!.!.in the shows they are exactly they same as the illistrations in the mangas!. but u have to remember that most manga are made into a tv series!.!.!.and animation costs money so they need to make it simple!. but i like mangas so dont hateWww@Enter-QA@Com

japenese comics normally have an end, not all anime is emotional and emo, read some Hellsing, or ranma 1/2!. also anime characters dont reinvent themselves!. There are like how many spidermans (not counting clones and alternates in amazing spiderman) and how many batmans!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

You know we don't need a reason why we like it!. :)
It's just really cool!. :)

It's the same with you!.
You like comics cause they are colored and awesome

and so it's the same with us!. :)

Your comics are to you

enough said lolWww@Enter-QA@Com

It's!.!.!.Japanese!?

I think comics are more violent, and have to do with 'Marvel' Heroes!.

While Manga is more real life oriented and has characters that people can relate to!. Although I've never read Manga!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Manga is so cool- the style of drawing is always different yet has the same elements!. The storylines are often based around normal people with powers, normal people's dramatic lives and stuff!. It's great!Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don`t like Comics because it`s mostly violent and yeahs!.

The reason why I like manga because it got great drawings and stories,
their drawings are not plain and simple!. I reckon the simple and plain one is comics!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I've never really read comic books!. I only looked about 4 pages !?
I think that's because people wants something new and
they've find a new kind of comic book!. It really made people interested!.

That's it!. =]Www@Enter-QA@Com
