I've never seen Berserk or Witch Hunter Robin myself, but from what I hear Berserk (the anime) stops in a strange place, so you'll have to read the manga from there, and that Witch Hunter Robin takes a little while to pick up!.

Witch Hunter Robin is really good, I'm watching it right now, and it's a pretty serious anime!. I like it a lot!
And Trinity Blood you may like, it's not really a comedy, it's kind of serious!. There's action, some sci-fi, but the main character can be unintentionally goofy ;)

Hmm!.!.!. Death note is a good one!. also try Gunslinger girl (one of my favorites), Ergo Proxy, and Tokko!. Bleach and Getbackers are kind of serious, but they have a lot of comedic points too!. And there's always the good old classic Full Metal Alchemist!.!.!.
