Hiragana characters don't have a meaning, as far as I know!. They were developed to allow the Japanese to write more without needing the Chinese characters (mostly for the women of the time as they weren't to write kanji)!.

According to the website below, the hiragana are based on kanji, but I don't think they take the meaning (it's almost like asking what the letter "B" means)!. The original kanji is supposedly this one:

寸 : スン T1 す みき measurement; foot (from Jim Breen's Kanji Dictionary, www!.wwwjdic!.com)

If you were writing with a brush, it'd be easier to include the line and the straight part down in one brush stroke, without lifting it, so I think that's a reasonable origin kanji!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

hmmm!.!.!.!. I don't know if there is an exact definition behind that character, but it's pronounced as "S~" (Not the actual letter pronunciation but the sssssss sound like a snake, but shorter of course)Www@Enter-QA@Com

Its the Hiragana Character Su!.
