Futurama: Why do they keep using surnames?!

Question: Futurama: Why do they keep using surnames!?
Why does everybody call Turanga Leela "Leela" and Philip J!. Fry "Fry"!? Is it common in the USA to use surnames when addressing your friends!? (On the other hand, Amy Wong is "Amy" for everyone, so I am a bit confused!.)

In our country, for example, this habit is used almost solely among teenagers and would be considered quite offensive in common talk!. I absolutely don't catch the usage in such personal statements like "I love you, Leela"!. If you can't use the given name for whatever reason, it is always possible to say "mister Fry" or "miss Leela" instead, isn't it!?

Maybe I am just wasting the time I could be enjoying this brilliant series by too much thinking :-) But I've become totally addicted on it during the past month and I'm eating every detail :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com

That's actually a good question!.!.!. I'm not sure either!. I think Fry introduced himself using his last name as a nick name!. Leela does the same thing!. I don't think they consider their first names all that important!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think the reason is because it is much easier to say Leela and Fry than Turanga and Philip!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
