Answers:
Amalgam Universe

It was more than just one comic - there was a month of books that came out with individual issues of these comics featuring heroes that were, appropriately enough, an amalgam of characters from the DC and Marvel universes!. This happened in 1996 and then again in 1997 when the first time it proved to be so profitable!.

This corresponded with the miniseries DC vs!. Marvel, which had famous characters from each universe fight one another!. It occurred between issues 3 and 4 of the 4 issue miniseries, as the story dictated that the two universes would be combined by a character named Access who was created for the miniseries - and still pops up from time to time in continuity - to stop a conflict between the two personifications of the universes, who were metaphysical beings that were brothers!.!.!. blah blah blah!.!.!. the reasoning isn't really all that important - where's the punching!? Some selected matches were voted on by the general public with some results that were considered to be somewhat controversial - or at least as controversial as a hypothetical fight between two fictional characters with no bearing on reality could be!.

There's a list of each of the publications and some small detail about each over at wikipedia that is pretty accurate!.
