Well, you should probably Wiki it, but I think they basically only have a few sentences, so here goes:
L has called upon Naomi Misora to investigate three murders that have occurred in LA!. Misora is "on leave" from her job as an FBI agent (though the real reason is that she screwed up on apprehending some gang members/drug criminals!. She couldn't shoot one of them, because he was a young teen and it bothered her!.)
Anyway, back to the plot: When Misora arrives at the first murder scene, she finds a man hiding under the bed of the victim (named Believe Bridesmaid- a guy)!. He looks almost exactly like L (though Misora never met L at this point) and introduces himself as Ryuzaki, a private detective hired by the victim's family!. His mannerisms pretty much freak Misora out, and eventually he proposes that they work together to solve the case!. She calls L afterward to tell him about the stranger; L basically tells her to be careful but gives it the ok to work with him!. They go through each murder scene over the next week or so, with Ryuzaki subtly helping Misora along in finding the clues the killer has left behind in each scene!. They eventually figure out that the killer is obsessed with the initials BB (the second victim's name is Quarter Queen, whose initials are bb when it's upside down and lowercase!. The third victim's name is Backyard Bottomslash!. Nice names, huh!?) Sometime in between these investigations, Misora is attacked in an alley by a masked stranger (before visiting the second crime scene) and L tells her he knows the killer's identity and tells her his name is B (before visiting the third crime scene)!. She and Ryuzaki find that there will be a fourth murder, and they figure out the time, apartment complex location, and date of it!. The problem is, there's two people in the building who are initialled BB!. They send the two off to a hotel to protect them and each cover their apartments!.
While covering her spot, Misora revises the investigation and soon figures out that Ryuzaki is the killer B!. She runs down to the apartment he's covering, only to find that he is on fire and quickly on his way to death!. She saves him and arrests him!. His name is actually Beyond Birthday- an apt description of the fact that he was born with shinigami eyes!. He is a genius and was brought to Wammy's House!. He was supposed to be a backup for L (NOT a successor like Near and Mello!. He and another person A were raised as backups; A killed himself because of the pressure) if he were to die!. Apparently, his victims were meant to die when they did, so that's PART of the reason why he killed them!. The main one is that he wanted to give L a case that he couldn't solve!. He tried to imitate L in any way he could, and he wanted to surpass him!. However, he failed and was put in jail; he wanted to kill himself so L would never be able to completely solve/figure out everything about the case (ex: no one knows that he has the eyes!.) Anyway, Misora is back on her job; she's in the subway station, and she sees a man who eerily reminds her of Ryuzaki!. She approaches him, he tries to hug her, she proceeds to push him away and kick him down a flight of stairs!. She asks for his name so she could arrest him for sexual harrassment (lol) and he tells her to call him Ryuzaki!.
