A much better post-apocalyptic giant-bugs-take-over-the-earth anime is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind!. A very good movie with a similar plot, if I remember correctly!. (although it is much less starship troopers, and more epic fantasy/science fiction)
Wolf`s Rain may have a similar "mature" feel to it!. It's post-apocalyptic with some weird wolf stuff going on!. (the main characters are wolves, but they aren't, but they are!?) It's been quite a few years since I saw it--it was my first anime!. (5 years ago maybe!?) I liked it very much at the time, but my tastes and expectations have obviously changed--no idea how I would view it watching it now!.
