I admit they start of with a silly villain and storyline!. The series start becoming serious on Arlong arcs though!.
You might wanna read nami past life to see how serious One Piece can be at some point!. Those goofy funny moment is only a comic relief since the series could be dead serious whenever they need to!.

Personally this Robin retrieval arcs is better than Sasuke retrieval arc that has been dragging on too long in Naruto!.
Sure, Luffy is an idiot, but there's some moment where his idiot plays a major role in the series!. I got goosebumps when I think of the scene where Luffy said something like this when he asked Robin to come back to him

If you like Naruto, then you might like One Piece as well!. This series is about a team of pirate and each one of them has their own goal!. Luffy wanted to be a pirate king, Zoro wanted to be the greatest swordsmen, Sanji wanted to find East Blue, Nami wanted to draw the map of the world, Usopp wanted to be a brave person, each of them has their own goal!.
On the way to achieved their dream, they're going through a lot of obstacle!.
Luffy is really cared for his nakama (friend) though!. You can see his willing to do anything to make sure nothing happen to them!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You watched the 4Kids dub!? If yes, it's not surprising why you got a bad impression of One Piece; everyone did including me!. 4Kids wasn't translating the dialogue - it was twisting both the audio and the video!. Giving different accents to characters is not an example of giving them unique personalities!. The original Japanese voice actors are by far superior to those who did the One Piece dub!. Actually, that 4Kids dub shouldn't deserve to be called "One Piece"!. It's just some poorly made American cartoon!.
After watching the originals with subtitles, One Piece has become my favourite anime/manga altogether!. Give One Piece a chance!. If you're a little impatient, you can just read the manga to avoid the fillers in the anime!. However, both are worth watching!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To be honest it's just a matter of preference!. I personally, am not a fan !.!.!. I guess it just seems to childish to me!.
Here is the plot:

He follows the path of the deceased Pirate King, Gold Roger, from island to island on his way to the great treasure One Piece!. During the course of the story, the crew contend with both other less moral pirate crews and the Navy!. The latter are the subordinates of the World Government, who apparently seek justice by ending the Great Age of Pirates!. Many background story elements involve the delicate balance of power between the World Government and the world's most powerful pirate crews!.

I really like it, though as everyone says the animation for it really isnt drawn that well!. The dub for it is horrible though so I suggest if you want to watch it to go with subs!. You can go here to watch it subbed if you'd like!. The anime is pretty long, but it all depends on your tastes in anime if this is for you or not!.
