Question: In Naruto, why does the story start with the 3rd hokage when in the past there was already a 4th!?
dont they have hokages one at a time!? so why has there already been a 4th if the 3rd came after!?

When Naruto begins, the 4th Hokage had died 12 years ago!. It was said that he died shortly after he was appointed the Fourth Hokage!. Since he died earlier than the former Hokage (Third) that was retired, the Third was forced back into the position of Hokage!. The Third stayed as the Hokage until his death!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The Third Hokage was the hokage once and then he retired!. Then they chose a fourth hokage and he died sacrificing himself to defend agfainst the Nine tailed fox!.
