What's the best route to getting songs published without being ripped off?!

Question:

What's the best route to getting songs published without being ripped off?

I write songs and really want to get them heard. I don't know if I want to go ahead and sell them straight away but I'd like some way of broadcasting them to the nation but without running the risk of being ripped off. I have no actual copyright so I'm a bit worried. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Answers:

As a way of self-copyrighting, record your songs onto a disc, or whatever format you'd like and send it in the post to yourself, but don't open it when you receive it.

This would then act as way of proof of when you wrote and recorded your songs, as it would be date-stamped by the post office.

I have done this in the past - just made up a massive parcel of all the tunes and copies of lyrics I had created. Luckily, I haven't had to open it for any reason.

As for advertising it, I agree with using a site like Myspace - let me know when you do it and I'll add you!! :-)
