My guitar is not working?!

Question:

My guitar is not working?

I'm trying to get my old electric guitar (Aria Pro II) to work and it's acting strange. Sometimes it doesn't work but if I strum it for a bit it'll work again. Right now when I touch the cord to that litlte metal bit that your supposed to plug the cord into it doesn't make that fuzzy sound in the am that it normally should. I don't know whats wrong does anybody have any idea? I'm thinking it could be my amp but i've tried another amp and its done that before too but not as often. I changed my cords already so it can't be that either.

Answers:

What part of the cord's plug was touching the output jack? (the metal bit you plug your cord into) You will only get an amp buzzing sound if the very tip of the cord touches metal. If you touched the tip to metal and the amp didn't buzz you have an amp or cord problem. If the amp checks out and your sure your cord is ok then do the following tests on your guitar. Has the output jack mounting nut become loose? If so you very likely have a loose wire on your output jack. Try wiggling the plug when the guitar is connected to your amp (set at a moderate volume). If it cuts in or out corresponding to the movement you found the problem. Likewise if you find that it cuts in and out when you actuate the pickup selector switch, suspect a dirty or worn out switch. The same test applies to the volume and tone controls. You could remove the cavity covers and look for unconnected wires as was suggested, but if you find a loose wire would you know where it belongs? Do you or a friend have soldering skills? (twisting the wires on doesn't cut it) Do you know what part to buy and where if it needs a switch or potentiometer? If not it might be best to seek the help of a professional repair shop. It sounds like your problem isn't too serious. A pro repair may be less money than you might imagine. In my shop a jack replacement costs less than $15.00
