Why do American companies shy away from "NC-17" and "AO" rat!

Question:

Why do American companies shy away from "NC-17" and "AO" ratings?

I think the most money is in adult only movies and video games. the largest section of products should be for adults over 21 because they have jobs, ie the money, right?

the public perception of the ratings systems are backwards in my opinon. Americans are too sensitive about "AO" and "NC-17 ratings for movies and video games with violent and sexual content. companies sneak in extreme content into the "R" and "M" category for the 13-20 age demographic, which is hysterical.

Answers:

No, most companies know they will make MORE money on "familly friendly" material, because most people (adults included) will shy away from AO and NC-17. Most adults have kids, and spend their money taking their kids to movies and buying them video games. Why do you think PG-13 horror movies do so well despite being crap, while good horror movies like "Hatchet" face pressure to tone things down to get an "R"? Because kids go to see them.
