Drumset Help please! Can anyone tell me how to tune them please?

I am looking for a good way to tune the toms in a decent drumset that my friend gave to me. I am looking for basic info as far as tuning drums, also when i hit my 12" tom and 16" floor tom the snare buzzes and i cant seem to fix that either. Thanks!

Hi! First off, about the snare buzzing, there's nothing really to fix it. It's caused by the tom's overtones which are vibrating the snares. To dampen it a bit, put some duct tape or electrical tape on the bottom head. That will mute some of the overtones produced by the snare. For tuning you toms, If you don't know already, tune your toms by tightening or loosening the lugs going across from one another. For example, if you want your tom to sound a bit higher pitched, tighten one lug by turning it clockwise, then tighten the one directly across from it. If it's still too low, go to the next lug, tighten it, and then tighten the one directly across from that one, and so on. When I first started drums, I was taught that the bottom (resonance) head should be tighter than the top head, so the bottom head should be tuned to 2/3 of a higher pitch. However, now I just kind of mess around with each tom until I get the sound I want.

Hope this helps!
