Movie extras?!

Movie extras?
has anyone ever been an extra in movie/commercials?If so, can you tell me what's involved and is it worth it? I'm obviously not looking to make this my day job, but any extra cash always comes in handy. i heard about a company that sends movie locations to your own e-mail, but they require a $40 fee first.Sounds a bit fishy to me. Any feedback is appreciated.

A good friend of my girlfriends is an extra in movies. She only does this no other jobs and if it were only her living on her own there in California it would not nearly pay for the cost of living to just be an extra. If you live there or somewhere where there are a lot of movies and television productions taking place and you just want to do it for extra it would be good but my girlfriend told me the pay for it was only minimum wage which surprised me a great deal. It would be better to actually audition and try to get bigger roles if you want to break into the business being an extra it sounds to me like it doesn't pay at all.
