Answers:

I was told in psych classes that younger kids in general have a hard time telling the difference between real & pretend, which includes TV, stories in books, movies, etc. I forget when that is supposed to wear off (by age 10, at the absolute latest), but it's something in the developing mind. (sort of like when you give them 2 containers, one tall & skinny & the other short & wide, & fill the tall one with water. The kid pours the water into the other container, & when asked, will usually say the 1st container had more water in it, because of the way it looks--never mind the water was completely poured from one to the other)

I don't watch a lot of kids' programming these days--the cartoons just aren't as good as they were when I (& you, it sounds like--go He-Man!) was growing up. But it strikes me that either it's too soft & gooey or fairly hard-edged, with very little middle ground. No one really knows what the happy medium is. Had you ever heard about the Fantastic 4 cartoon in the 70s, I think it was? The Human Torch was replaced with a little floating robot called H.E.R.B.I.E. (he's been added to the canon to some degree) because the execs were worried that children would set themselves on fire to imitate the Torch. That's 30 years ago. Superhero costumes now with a cape say: "Cape does not let user fly."

I will say (as I have said to others for at least a decade)--there is no common sense anymore. When the parents don't have it, they can't teach their kids to exercise it. And that's one of the roots of the problem.
