I just bought a banjo, with lark written on the headstock?!

Question:

I just bought a banjo, with lark written on the headstock?

does anyone know anything about this make? i can find nothing on the internet. i know it's not fancy, just a beginner banjo, but it's used, definately older, and made of heavy red-brown wood. it has gears on the tuning knobs and a nice inlay on the bridge. does anyone know when these were made and if they are very good banjos??

Answers:

Sounds like you have a frankenstein model. That's where someone's gone and bought bits and pieces and put them together. I've never heard of a Lark head, it sounds like an off brand, but it could be perfectly fine. All the banjos I've owned have had Remo heads. The only good banjo is the one that sounds good when it's played. You can own a low-end garage-sale banjo and make it sing like a bird. You can also spend the money on a Gibson Mastertone and sound like crap. I would guess though that your banjo wouldn't sell for much if that's what you're trying to do. It's only real worth will be to you personally.
