Where to rent violins in Singapore?!

Question:

Where to rent violins in Singapore?

I'm 20 yrs old this year and I've music background.. i would like to take up violin now and try it, see if it's suitable for me or not. But i've no idea where to rent? And also, any recommendations where to buy 2nd hand violins?

Answers:

I think it's wonderful you want to take up the violin, but I'm mystified why you would want to rent one, as a good violin can be purchased for the price of a few months rent.

Also, the notion that a "secondhand" violin would be cheaper somehow, is a mistaken notion. Violins pretty much invariably go up in value, the older they get. So the cheapest one you can get is a new one, not a "used" one. In other words, "used" is better. It's not like buying a car; it's more like buying an antique.

There is a wonderful music school in Singapore, the Mandeville Music School:

The photographs are mostly of children, but the teachers there also teach adult students, and may know of instruments for sale. I'd call them and see; I'm sure they would not mind. There are probably students there with instruments for sale, from which they're upgraded.

You can also buy a very decent student instrument online. See:

The shipping from the US to Singapore is not that much; probably around $25.US

The best way of all to find an instrument is to first find a good private teacher (which you will need to learn the instrument), and the teacher can guide you to a purchase suitable to your needs.

Good luck!
