I saw Paul Potts sing "Nessun Dorma" and stun a huge crowd...?!

Question:

I saw Paul Potts sing "Nessun Dorma" and stun a huge crowd...?

...with a performance that left me in tears. What I'm wondering, though, is how he managed to equally impress young & old, men & women, and have every person in the crowd just *explode* for him. He's obviously an amazing talent, but opera (no matter how well performed) doesn't normally grab teenagers the way it did when I saw his performance. Does the UK have a strong national connection to "Nessun Dorma" that I (asking from the States) wouldn't know about?

Answers:

As sung by Pavarroti, it was the theme tune for the TV coverage of the World cup (Italia '90). It did tons of good for the popularity of Pavarroti and operatic music in general, and the song has become imprinted on the nations psyche as the one piece of Opera that the British know and love.
