Answers:
LP was started by three of the bands current members who were friends in highschool. Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson got Joe Hahn and Mark Wakefield to join to the band (which was then called Xero) and Mark was later kicked out due to lack of talent (pretty much). Later, they got CHester Bennington, refered by Jeff Blue of Zomba, and began as Hybrid Theory. Because of copyright issues they had to change the name to Lincoln Park, but since the website was taken for that, it was changed to Linkin Park.
They are currently, in my opinion, the best band out there and have sold over 40 million albums, and thier debut album Hybrid Theory has sold over 24 million copies as of October 2006.
Chester Bennington used to be the band Grey Daze and still sounded amazing then, but he left after confilicts with other band memebers and them trying to take credit for his and another bandmate's lyrics.
He had a few unfortunate incidents in his life, such as sexual abuse and bad drug use, which has helped make his lyrics for Linkin Park more powerful. His favorite band is Depeche Mode and his solo project Dead By Sunrise (previously entitled Snow White Tan) will have sounds influenced by DM.
