What's the best acoustic guitar for a "skilled novice"?!

Question:

What's the best acoustic guitar for a "skilled novice"?

I owned a Yamaha FG175 guitar but gave it to my daughter who played in a band. Now I want to play guitar again. I'm looking for quality sound in a visually nice guitar but without paying for power and prestige. Ease of fingering would be a plus. Also are there wider and narrower necks or are they mostly a standard width? Thank you for your input.

Now, this would be my own personal opinion...
When I was looking for a 12-string, I played a whole POO-load of guitars! I played Martins, Taylors, Takashimi...etc
Those are all very nice....and EXTREMELY OVERPRICED!!
Why spend 1200-2000.00 on something when you can get a beautiful guitar with the SAME high quality sound for around 4 or 5 hundred?? I ended up buying an Alvarez. Not JUST because of the price. I was looking for a certain warm, full, harmonic sound and it seemed to me that all of the really expensive "popular brands" were missing something. I found what I was looking for in the Alvarez. The action is low, so it is very easy and comfortable to play with no buzzing or thudding, the neck is just the right size for a smaller hand to manage, and the quality is outstanding. I just can't say enough about it. It's a gorgeous and incredible sounding instrument. All you're really getting with the more pricey guitars is a "name".
