Question:

How come when singers get into the old years (50s- 80s) do their voices crack and shake?

Answers:

Because time takes its toll on things like the muscles controlling breathing, the vocal cords etc. Also, if you view the voice as a musical instrument-it just gets worn out from over-use.
It doesn't alway happen, though. Sinatra was still good 'til he was about 60, Tony Bennett is 80 and his voice is as good as it ever was. I saw Ella Fitzgerald in concert when she was 67, and she still had it all in aces. And of course there are many more.I guess that there's an element of luck there, and a lot of good technique.
