What Should My Next Step in The Music Business Be?!

Question:

What Should My Next Step in The Music Business Be?

I'm a student and I don't have a good paying job. I always wanted to earn money with the songs I write. I've recorded about 16 in cd's, but I haven't registered them yet. I have submitted their titles alone on BMI. I don't want to lose my rights as the composer. I could post clips of them on the internet or the whole songs, but I'm not sure if that's too much of a legal risk. I could use the advice from someone who has experience in these things.

Answers:

If you're serious about your music, register each song with the US Copyright Office. Then you'll have the legal backing to protect them, although copyright begins when a song is in tangible form (sheet music, produced on a CD, etc).
