Does it have different woods/strings/pickups, and are jazz basses able to play hard rock/metal with the same sound as bass without 'jazz' in the name?

Usually a jazz bass has no frets like a stand up bass.
One needs a different sound for jazz that for, let's say punk rock.
So a jazz bass would have different guts or electronics that would deliver the rich deep sound needed to play jazz..
