I want to take up guitar...and I have a couple questions---?!

Question: First off, is there a certain type of guitar I should buy? Good guitar for starters...

And I am curious how long you think it would be before I could play a few fairly simple songs (christian songs in particular). I mean, am I looking at a couple years before I could play any? Or what? I am a pretty fast learner.

An acoustic guitar is going to be the best for learning on for two reasons. Acoustic guitars are more forgiving of mistakes, and there are few things worse that living with a person that is trying to learn guitar on a amplified electric (just kidding...but not really). A great option for beginners is a nylon string acoustic guitar. Nylon string guitars are often thought of as junkie guitars (and a lot of them are), but you can find a fairly good one without much trouble. The advantages of learning on a nylon string guitar is that they often times come with wider necks making it easier to find the string you intend to hold down, and it makes it easier to hold down that string without accidentally touching other strings.

With a good amount of practice you should be able to play some simple songs in a couple weeks. I'm assuming you are only getting into this for fun, so I would recommend trying to find a good balance between learning and "jamming". Start out by learning your major cords in the open position (very end of the guitar). Once you have learned and can switch between those simple cords there will be hundreds of simple rhythm songs you can play, and you can now pick up a guitar and have fun making something sound good on it. From there you can spend as much time going over scales (very important) and learning other cords. This aproche to learning the guitar worked really well for me, because if you just spend all of you time "learning" you might not have any fun and give up, but remember to find a good balance between playing and practicing or you will not progress as a guitar player.

you could probalby play pretty easy songs within half a year if you have a good teacher and are apretty fast learner.

A month. Get an acoustic guitar and practice your scales for about an hour a day. within a week you should have them down. Then work on basic chords. GAD, GCF, EAD and you will be able to strum along with almost any song out there.

Good luck with it, and if you can, pick up a song book like Randy travis, or some older country stuff and try to finger pick along with the chords on the cd. It will take you as far, and maybe even farther than you need to go.

I'd learn on an acoustic guitar if I were you. Don't spend a lot of money on your first guitar, but don't by a cheap one with bad action. ...that probably doesn't help that much.

Depends on how much you practice. People learn at different paces. It was a good 3 mths before people could recognize what I was playing (I still stink) while my friend had all but mastered it in the same time. Good luck.

for beginners buy simple wooden guitar.
for playing it depends upon how much do you practise and how much do you commit. you should give everything 100% even if it is christian songs.

Get yourself a "first act" guitar and a guitar chord book. You'll be playing the songs you want to in no time.

My son wants to do the same thing and they have a wide variety to choose from starting at beginner to expert. Included in their pkgs. are everything you need including a cd to help teach you to play. They also list users' remarks.
Also I noticed here in town schools' music teachers give lessons after school hours and weekends.

not long it depends on how dedicated you are.the hardest thing is getting your fingers trained at the start and getting over the initial pain and frustration without throwing in the towel.if your dedicated it won't take long

well thats cool cuz thats what im learning to i felt God call me to music. any ways if you want to play like hevy hard rok music than play an electric guitar if you want soft county slow music than try an acoustic guitar wel about haw long, its hard to say it depends on how dedicated to it you are. if you practice every day, you could learn pretty quickly. it also depends on how you plan to learn: mentour or guide book.
