There is always 2 people involved - one is double jointed so can bend and fold in confined spaces. When a 'random' person is picked from an audience- they aren't really random. Therefore the magician says 'wiggle your toes' and the person does so.
The 'head end' can be anyone, their torso is laid flat and their bum and legs drop into a compartment lower than the rest of the box. It is very unusual for both ends (from the middle) to be shown as only the squashed end can be seen well.

Two people - who can both 'contort' themselves into a half-a-person-sized box! (One does the feet, the other the head).
They distract your attention just after the beautiful 'victim' climbs into the big box!
It's two (flexible) people in the box. You only see the one go in but its made up of two compartments. The top one the performer goes in and you see their head. And in the other is someone who sticks their feet out. So the two sections can be separated to look like they're cut in half.
