Guitar help. What is an arpeggio?!

Question: I'm trying to learn the tabs to Sweet Child O' Mine from Guns N' Roses. After the intro it says
"Verse: Four strings arpeggio with the chords D C G D (twice)"
I looked up arpeggio and it's a broken down chord... but is there a specific pattern to how you play it?

Playing each note in a chord individually...
Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact note progression of the phrase you are referring to....I would say try different sequences till you get it right....

Sounds like you've got the right notes....now just listen to the song and play the phrase that you are trying to figure out and them mimic it....

You'll get it! GnR isn't horribly difficult to nail....Good Luck!

An Arpeggio is best described on a string instrument such as a guitar or harp. Harp is the easiest to describe, so I'll do so now.

To play a chord on a harp, you need to pluck one string at a time in quick succession. Infact, if you know the song Stairway To Heaven .... you'll hear an arpeggio in the very very first chord of the song.

The first chord is A-minor. You play each note on the beat of the bar (ie whilst tapping 1, 2, 3 then 4, you will play the notes A, C, E then A).

This effect of gradually bringing in all the notes of the chord is what's called an arpeggio.
