Will the americans who keep saying that the clocks do not go back tonight realise that this is the United Kingdom and Ireland section and the clocks DO go back tonight!!!!!!
It is 100 years exactly since the idea of introducing daylight saving was mooted in BRITAIN. The Government of THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND (Ireland had not yet spilt from Britain) introduced Daylight Savings during the First World War - 1916.

The farmers moved the clocks around but I don't know when.

The clocks change November 4 not tonight. Some people thought that an extra hour of daylight in the evening would be good for our workers with banker's hours so they could get a round of golf in in the evening. I personally don't like it. I like to feel the natural change of the seasons and you don't get that when they jerk the clock around.

Was something to do with WW1 to give farmers an extra hour
of daylight
Re who moves them usually the woman of the house

They meant daylight savings - Originally invented by Bejamin Franklin.
The idea behind it, if we put our clocks back by one hour during winter and an hour forward during summer, we get more sunshine and daylight. It was probably most commonnly used for agriculture where daylight was essential for growing crops and harvesting it.

I found this on the BBC Jersey website.
It's all to do with saving the hours of daylight, and was started by a man called William Willett, a London builder, who lived in Petts Wood in Kent

Basically, he reckoned that you could improve the population's health and happiness by putting forward the clocks by twenty minutes every Sunday in April and do the opposite in September.
They have tried not changing them, but as always someone moans about it. tut. Cant please everybody.
Now we know.....
