Because its safer than being stalked or being humiliated or something.
Some people really do use their real picture...I think it's a bad idea. That's how people get stalkers...and get harassed.
I like the avatars that they give you to play with...you can come up with something that looks close to how you look, or design someone just for fun!
I use my real picture. I do so because those avatars are cartoon representations and I'm not a cartoon.

This is really me. I just don't like the avatars, and I have trouble with the avatar making device. I can never get it to look like me. Bleh, this is just easier.

I personally prefer the big abstractions that the avatars provide. They kind of generalize and smooth over those not-so-attractive details.... so I'm keeping my cutesy avatar, even though I only resemble that pseudo-human-head by about 1%.
Edit: By the way, my opinion is that at least 10% of the avatar pictures are not the real person's picture - the fact is, it's very easy to find a picture of a model somewhere, and it's very easy also to make even the real the picture look more attractive, etc. I also dislike the *****y avatars - I'm straight but I think avatar's shouldn't be so overtly sexual - this is supposed to be an intellectual website, not some dating site for swingers.

It depends on what you mean. You think people post flattering pics of themselves? If so, people do that all the time on Myspace, Msn spaces, Facebook etc. Nobody's going to post 'unflattering' pics of themselves. So big deal. What's the problem.
Yeah, it's the closest representation I could find and my friends and family asked me if it was in fact me. So it (the photo) is close to the real article.
