Yes, he was from Bristol, and he was in charge of assembling the radio 1 road show in the 70s and 80s ! They used to have a quiz where contestants had to guess how many miles he had driven from one venue to the other. ( I now feel sad that I know this ! )

I remember him. Dont know where he is now but he was at the Radio one Roadshow 1991 in Clacton Essex . I was there 2nd row 20,000 people were there!!!

its smiley miley mileage time'
way back in the radio one road show days he used to keep the distance from one stop to the next, they would then pick people out of the crowd to guess the distance.

The Radio 1 Roadshow was an annual summer event hosted and broadcast by BBC Radio 1 from the 1970s through to the 1990s. [1] The concept for the Roadshow came from Radio 1 producer and later controller, Johnny Beerling.

Various disk jockeys from the station would visit British towns (usually by the coast) to play a live set and meet local people to play their requests, take part in competitions and give away "goodie bags" of Radio 1 gifts. Accompanying the DJs were a support crew led by Tony Miles, nicknamed "Smiley Miley", who had provided the original caravan for the first Roadshow.

The Radio 1 Roadshow began in July 1973, a Land Rover pulling a converted caravan around British holiday spots. Listeners would pack beaches to glimpse Noel Edmonds and Paul Burnett and catch 'Radio 1 is Wonderful' pens. It made an unlikely star of a driver/producer called Smiley Miley, who invented a game for listeners to guess how far the Roadshow had travelled between venues. In those months when the weather was less reliable, Radio 1 staff decamped en masse for urban Fun Weeks.
