I did that and would highly recommend taking lessons. I learned things on my own but at a much slower pace than if I had taken lessons and I picked up a lot of bad habits along the way. If you really don't want to take lessons I'd suggest learning guitar tabliture. Here's a link to lots of songs you may want to learn how to play. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
practice every day for half an hour!
There are chord books and DVD's to help you along with this process.Start off with the basics,and move on,after you've mastered them.
