Why is banjo music associated with incest??!

Question: For whatever reason, whenever I hear banjo music playing, I conjure up images of incestuous relationships. I have no idea why!! It's gotten to the point where I've seen a shrink about it. I want to enjoy it again, but somewhere in my subconcious mind it keeps happening. Does anyone else have this happen??

Probably because almost everyone has heard "Dueling Banjos" and associates it, or sometimes any banjo music, with the movie "Deliverance". Even people that haven't actually seen the movie know about particular scenes of the main characters being attacked/abused by hillbillies. The character that outplayed his counterpart in "Dueling Banjos" was supposed to be inbred.

The movie Deliverance has burned its way through the rest of pop culture.

You've probably heard all the stories and jokes about in-bred people living in the southern USA. The banjo music is also popular in that area. For myself, I associate banjo music with the movie, "Deliverance."

I've never seen that film. But I think banjo music may make you think of the deep south, which can then make you think (rightly or wrongly) of incest. Its a by-product!

Its a shame as the roots of music associated with banjos is really good!
