Is karaoke pronounced "Ka-ree-o-kee" or "Ka-ro-kee"?!

Question: I've heard it both ways.

Answers: I've heard it both ways.

Ka-ree-o-kee

I say
Kherr ee oh kee

carry oh kee with the emphasis on the oh.

In the states, Ka-ree-oh-kee. In Asia, Ka-Ra-Oh-Kay.

According to the Merriam-Webster online site, www.m-w.com, Karaoke comes from two words: "kara" meaning "empty" and "oke" meaning short.

With the division of words, I'd suggest that the former choice is the more correct of the two. Hope this helps!

the former
