Probably the 1960s, without question.

Variety and creativity and pure talent were abundant.

I'm not a Beatles fan, but they were pure 1960s. And they did love songs and others - "I want to Hold Your Hand", "Yesterday", "Yellow Submarine", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", and others. Great variety.

The Supremes - every song seemed unique.

Turtles - 'Eve of Destruction', 'It aint me Babe', 'You Showed Me', and others.

Inna Gadda Davida (In the Garden of Eden) is a masterpiece. 17 minutes long! DJs used to take lunch breaks when they played it - no joke.

The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean.

Johnny Cash - doing crossover hits and pure country.

'Hang on Sloopy' and 'Hey Hey Hey Goodbye' are still played by bands at football games every weekend.

Gospel songs made the top 40 - Spirit in the Sky, Oh Happy Day, Brother Love

Neil Diamond wrote and sang many songs - Soolimon, Solitary Man, Shiloh, Sweet Caroline - which are imitated today.

In the 60s, three or four times a year the rock stations would do 'Oldies But Goodies' weekends. Not many market have their entire program playing 1960s and early 1970s music.

A friend in his early 20s told me today's music is better. I bet him that he could name / sing 50 songs from the 1960s, but not name / sing 5 songs from the 1990s. After a minute, he agreed.

1960s music permeates our society. Moves are written around song titles. 1960s songs are themes to many commercials.

And our kids know 1960s songs word for word.

In my opinion the 80s.
Why? Because it was the last real technological growth that occurred. Synthisizers were awsome in the 80s and are still sort after also guitar technique in rock peaked out in the eighties.
The music was all about having fun and excitement.
These days its all about attitude and feeling crap.

Fifties!
Because singers around now re-record all those good old songs, but never do it quite as good.
