Why did my strings on my viola burst?!


Question: i have a viola(an oversized violin) and my A string burst. i dont know why though. i didnt touch it until it popped. i didnt do anything to make it pop besides plucking it while tuning it. i live in new york and now tis the time of season whern the temperature drops ALOT!!! could that be why?? i need some explanations plz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was tuning my viola A string and it burst too. I'm glad it wasn't on my shoulder 'cause it would've hit my eye but it gave me a cut on my thumb. But you said you weren't tuning it so temperature change is probably it. I don't know why, but there are many things that get damaged with temperature change, and the strings happen to be it. If you haven't changed your strings for awhile, that's probably why too. They get old and worn out and snap. It's recommended you change them every 6 months, although I go cheap and change them any time they break...

It might be that there is some roughness on the nut; take it to a luthier and have them look at it.
